Outsourcing is an ‘Attractive Alternative’ to On-Site Data Centers

Outsourcing – whether to an external data center or to the cloud – remains a key trend affecting companies’ IT infrastructures, according to an article in a recent issue of Data Center Journal discussing the way 2010 was shaping up from an IT viewpoint.

“The economy remains shaky, and a recovery may or may not be in the cards,” the article states. “In either event, as companies look to save money, data center outsourcing will likely remain an attractive alternative to on-site facilities.”

“Colocation is one option that allows companies to maintain their own servers in a facility maintained by a service provider,” the article continues. “This option, however, carries a high price tag, but Gartner has indicated that colocation prices have peaked and will likely decline.”

The article also contends that “outsourcing of computing and storage resources to the cloud is likely to accelerate,” adding, “Whether this outsourcing will include mission-critical resources, however, remains uncertain.”
