Free data center and Internet services give Oregon startups a neighborly jump-start

Beaverton, Ore.—April 7, 2009—EasyStreet® Online Services Inc. (http://easystreet.com) is announcing its "EasyStreet Stimulus Package for Entrepreneurs," making free and deeply discounted Internet and data center services available now through September 30 to roughly 100 local startups. Five nonprofit business-support organizations will help pre-qualify entrepreneurs seeking these essential services.

EasyStreet focuses on data center services such as secure colocation, high-speed access, and dedicated and managed servers—vital services needed especially by science and technology companies. As with most Oregon-grown companies, EasyStreet started with a few people and a dream. Fourteen years later, EasyStreet is returning a favor to the community that made it successful.

"Tough times are great times for entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs are great for the Oregon economy," said EasyStreet President & CEO, Rich Bader in announcing the stimulus program. "As the economic downturn was being felt here earlier this year, we asked, "What can EasyStreet do to best help boost innovation here in Oregon?'" The resulting "Stimulus Package for Entrepreneurs" includes:

For general-business startups: free shared web site hosting and 10 standard email boxes for a year—a $49-per-month value. EasyStreet will waive all setup fees.

For approximately 10 science and technology companies needing data center services: one 3U x 30" colocation condo, including 2 Mbps bandwidth, 4 Amps power and an optional dedicated HP server rental at no charge for a year. This is a $500-per-month value.

Because EasyStreet wanted to include broadband Internet access in the Stimulus Package, it approached Clear® Wireless (http://www.clear.com). Clear has agreed to provide qualifying startups with a free USB device with any two-year mobile Wi-MAX contract signed through April 30.

"We wanted our Stimulus Package to be of real value and its benefits easy to receive," said Bader. "No hidden fees. No strings attached. Any entrepreneur wishing to apply should first go through one of our nonprofit support organizations for approval. That organization will forward their contact information on to EasyStreet and we'll take it from there. We do require startups to sign a "handshake agreement,' which covers our standard Internet acceptable use guidelines, but that's it. No binding contract. And they can step away at any time with no penalty."

Five local business support and incubator organizations are helping spread the word to their constituents and to vet applicants. These include:

Jennifer Bosze, executive director, TechAmerica Oregon said, "The EasyStreet Stimulus Package comes at an ideal time for our organization. TechAmerica has fostered an Emerging Business Network in Oregon for many years. The national board recently approved new, pre-revenue membership categories, making it easier for innovators to join our organization. Personally, I'm a strong advocate for entrepreneurism. You never know who might become the next Microsoft. Together with EasyStreet, we hope to give an advantage to our local start-ups and accelerate their growth though this support."

Said Linda Weston, executive director, Oregon Entrepreneurs Network, (OEN), "This is just the kind of support that emerging businesses need and it comes at a time when cash conservation is critical for fledgling enterprises. We are delighted to support Easystreet in its efforts to give back to the entrepreneurial community by supporting Oregon innovators in this way."

"New ventures have been hit very hard by the economic downturn because access to capital as well as revenue opportunities are now so severely constrained," said Carol Mason, director of the Portland State Business Accelerator (PSBA), an incubator for science and technology start-ups. "Easy Street is providing a critically needed resource to help a significant number of our new ventures weather these times. Every dollar we can help trim from their operating costs provides one more dollar they can use to pay wages and keep the company going until the economy turns around."

EasyStreet, a long-time presenting sponsor of the InnoTech Conference & Expo (http://www.innotechconference.com/pdx/), will feature the Stimulus Package in its exhibit booth at the Conference on April 23 at the Oregon Convention Center. Entrepreneurs—even those individuals working inside established enterprises—are encouraged to attend and learn more.
